Teen Counseling

Teen Counseling/Coaching
The teen years can be intense. Emotions are strong, reactions are quick, and communication can break down. Counseling gives teens a place to make sense of what they are feeling and learn how to handle it in a healthier way.
Few adults would want to do the teen years again. It has always been a difficult season of life to navigate - and its harder now than ever. Our counselor spent 11 years working full-time with teenagers, and many more years serving in youth-oriented programs. Combining compassion, experience, wisdom, and humor, he is skilled at equipping teens to thrive and succeed in the adolescent years.
We are happy to walk alongside Greenville teens aged 15 and older. If you have questions about our counseling or coaching for teens, please contact us using the form below or by scheduling a free exploratory call.

How do I know if my teen needs counseling?
If your teen is struggling with mood, behavior, relationships, or withdrawing more than usual and it is not improving, it may be time for extra support. Ongoing irritability, anxiety, anger, or loss of motivation are common things addressed in teen counseling.
What are the goals of teen counseling? Counseling goals vary depending on the person. The overall goals are to help teens understand their emotions, replace negative thoughts, manage reactions, improve relationships, and develop tools and strategies they can use at home, school, and other parts of life.
Is it normal for teens to be this emotional?
Teens experience strong emotions as part of development. However, when reactions are intense, frequent, or begin to affect daily life and relationships, it can be helpful to have guidance in learning how to manage those emotions.
What issues do teens typically talk about in counseling?
Common topics include anxiety, anger, stress, depression, friendships, family conflict, school pressure, and identity questions. Many teens also need help managing overwhelming emotions and reactions.
What happens in a teen counseling session?
Sessions are designed to help teens feel comfortable, understood, and not judged. They learn tools and strategies to manage emotions, handle stress, and respond more effectively in difficult situations.
What if my teen does not want to come to counseling?
That is common. Many teens are hesitant at first. With time and the right approach, most begin to feel more comfortable and open. Starting the process is often the hardest step. I usually encourage teens to try it for 2 or 3 sessions. If they hate it, then they can stop.
Will my teen actually talk during sessions?
Not always right away, and that is okay. Trust and counseling relationships builds over time. Sessions are paced in a way that helps teens feel safe enough to open up without pressure.
Will I be involved as a parent?
Confidentiality is an essential part of good counseling. Counseling requires a safe place to explore difficult thoughts and emotions. Other than a few extremely serious situations, a counselor cannot tell parents what is said in sessions. While giving your teen space to speak freely and build trust, our counselor is willing to meet with parents in separate sessions to discuss strategies for improving communication, discipline, and relationship.
Can counseling help with anger or attitude problems?
Yes. Many teens struggle with anger because they feel overwhelmed or do not know how to express what is underneath. Counseling helps them understand those feelings and respond in healthier ways.
Can counseling help with anxiety or stress?
Yes. Teens are under a tremendous amount of stress. In counseling, teens learn tools to manage racing thoughts, big emotions, stressful situations, and feel more in control.
How long does teen counseling usually take?
It depends on the situation. Some teens benefit from short-term support focused on a specific issue, while others work longer to build deeper skills and lasting change.
Is counseling only for serious problems?
No. Many teens come to counseling to build confidence, improve relationships, and learn how to handle stress before it becomes overwhelming.
