Greenville is a very religious city. God designed His churches to be powerful communities of help and healing. Unfortunately, they can also be very damaging. As a result, many in our community are "church burn" victims."

What is "church burn"?

Church burn refers to the emotional, relational, or spiritual wounds that occur from negative experiences with a church, ministry, or Christian family. While every church is made up of imperfect people, some environments become unhealthy by using fear, shame, manipulation, or excessive control to influence others. These experiences can leave people feeling confused, anxious, distrustful, or even afraid of God. Counseling provides a safe place to process those experiences and distinguish God's truth from the unhealthy behaviors of people.

Can I heal from "church burn" without giving up my faith?

Absolutely. Many people fear they have only two options: stay in an unhealthy environment or abandon Christianity altogether. There is a third path. Healing often involves separating biblical truth and life from the distorted messages or abusive practices you've experienced. How do I know if I came from a spiritually unhealthy or toxic family/church?

Some common warning signs include leadership that discourages honest questions, teaching that emphasizes fear or shame more than grace, pressure to earn God's acceptance through performance, excessive control over personal decisions, or an environment where abuse is ignored or excused. Not every difficult church experience is spiritual abuse, but if your church left you feeling shame, chronic guilt, fear, hopelessness, or burn-out, it may be helpful to explore those experiences with a counselor.

What happens during counseling for church hurt?
